Cascades Banding Camps

Learn How to Band Birds this Summer in the Cascade Mountains!

PSBO’s Cascades Banding Camps train teens and adults in bird-banding techniques. The presence of birds of all ages, and in heavy molt, at this location in this time of year offers an ideal opportunity to learn about differences among birds.  At the same time, participants will contribute to a study of how birds use moist high-elevation meadows in the Cascade Mountains to replace their feathers and prepare for southward migration. The data collected will help us unravel the role of these meadows in supporting the birds, and may even provide insight into how the effects of climate change will impact the meadows and the species that rely on them during this short but critical period.

We also offer people of all ages an opportunity to experience our Cascade Meadows field station during our Family Outreach Weekend in late August.  Bird walks, games, campfires, all meals, and more are offered for a very low per person/per day fee.  We often hear from families with children who want to attend Teen Banding Camp but are too young.  Family Outreach Weekend is a great way to introduce them–to birding, bird banding, and “field station life” in a less training-intensive setting and with more age-appropriate activities. Plus, you’ll be there to experience the fun right alongside them!
